Overview

Rwanda Energy Group provides energy in the whole country through four different main areas: Generation; Transmission, Distribution and Access to electricity.
ELECTRICITY ACCESS PROJECTS
Electricity access is still low in the country, around 67.1% of the population have access to electricity (48.6% on-grid and 18.5% off-grid).
Rural electrification is prioritised and the government targets to connect 48% of households with off-grid by 2024. Households remain the largest consumers of electricity and mainly use the electricity for lighting purposes. Productive use areas are the second largest consumers; The major industrial consumers include companies in cement, mining, textiles, services and the agricultural sectors
Considering the figures stated above; there is still a long journey to achieve the 100% access to electricity by 2024 (15% off-grid and 85% on-grid) and the country plans to increase its power generation.
GENERATION PROJECTS
When talking about generation, this is the process of building infrastructures made of civil works, electro-mechanical equipment (generator, turbines, boilers, penstocks, etc.) on source of technologies such as water, methane gas; sun, diesel to produce electricity or other form of energy.
Power generation opportunities have been identified in the following areas:
Hydropower Generation Development: This includes large, medium, small, mini and micro hydropower projects, Opportunities in consultancy, feasibility studies and EPC contracting.
Development of Methane Gas to Power: project development on lake kivu, feasibility studies and EPC contracting
Solar power development: Rwanda has attracted private investment in this sector and will likely continue to attract the private sector to develop Solar PV projects
Geothermal Power Development: Opportunities lie in exploration & prospecting, feasibility studies, EPC contracting
Peat to power: Opportunities are in projects development in this process of converting the available peat resources to power.
TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION PROJECTS
The generated power must be transmitted and distributed to end -users. The transmission of the generated power is mainly from generation plants or substations with voltage levels of 220,110, 30 & 15 KV.
